Red Sox Fans, O’s Limping, Hernandez back, etc.

Yesterday was my first in-person Orioles game of the season. I am not sure why I do this to myself but I always seem to go to games where the visiting team’s fans outnumber Oriole fans in both population and loudness. Last night was no different: Red Sox fans showed up in droves for the season opener between the Red Sox and the Orioles at Camden Yards. You’d never know that the Red Sox missed the playoffs last year the way these Red Sox fans behaved. You’d think they were honoring conquering heroes. I’ll say this right now and I really mean it: Red Sox fans at 1 million time more obnoxious than Yankee fans. Write it down, it’s true.

Let’s just talk about numbers; the Yankees have won 26 World Championships (4 in the last 10 years). The Red Sox have won 6, 5 of those before 1919. The point is that this generation of Red Sox fans haven’t known too much winning and yet they act like they are in some way entitled to it. They obviously forget the early 90’s or all the creative ways that they found to lose big games during their 86 year drought. Or the history of racism that plagued the franchise for most of the 20th century.

The Yankees are their own biggest critics and their own worst enemy. They beat themselves up and the journalists who follow them ALWAYS second guess everything they do, every dollar they spend, and every move they make. Boston’s corps of journalists are a bunch of Red Sox fans and apologists who paint the rosiest of the rosy and never shy away from reminding the rest of us how unfortunate we are if we’re not on the bandwagon. You know what? I am fully aware of how much it has sucked to be an Oriole fan for the past decade. We’ve had mediocre teams and other than the first half of 2005 we haven’t had much to get excited about. This doesn’t mean that I am going to join the “nation” or stop being a fan. We’re very happy for you that you won a World Series – now shut the fuck up about it.

It really makes me lament that I ever rooted for your team of idiots to win it all. I thought it would be a feel-good story for generations of fans (REAL fans – not bandwagon fans) who had experienced hard-luck to finally drink from the waters of good fortune. Now look at you – you’re fat and bloated from a taste of success. Evil empire? Even worse. You’ve become what you hate. Congrats on that.

Oh yeah, in case you were wondering then O’s dropped their third straight 6 – 1 to the all powerful Red Sox. Today pits Loewen against Beckett. Nothing would make me happier than a win tonight going into the road series against Cleveland. Nothing.

Ramon Hernandez should be in the starting lineup as well. Could not come at a better time. I think our lineup can be scary with Hernandez in the lineup. Hopefully he’ll be at 100% for tonight’s game. The Red Sox fans are probably wondering what a catcher under 36 years-old looks like.
